Annalee Virtual Museum: 1930's & 1940's

During the 1930s Annalee first started creating her puppets and dolls. The first actual tags with the name ANNALEE in block print started to be used. These tags were sewn flat. Another distinctive feature is the yarn hair, a feature that carried on through to the early 1960s. The oldest doll we have in our collection is from 1934. In the 1940s, the individual Annalee dolls documented the hairstyles and dress of the time, creating a lasting statement about art imitating life during the war years in New Hampshire.

Absolutely adorable vintage Annalee Doll standing on a green felt covered circular stand. Beautiful hand-painted face and signature by Annalee on the underside of his knapsack sets this particular doll far ahead of the rest. Everything from his green stitched felt hat down to his hand stitched felt boots and knitted wool socks is amazingly detailed. He is carrying a real twig as a walking stick, and on his back a cute cotton knapsack with straps that fasten over his shoulders and around his waist and is pinned in position. A shock of black yarn hair adorns his head and peeking out from it are two little detailed felt ears. Shorts and a pastel colored checked shirt with hand-painted detailing finishes off his walking attire. This doll does not have the wire frame characteristic of later Annalee dolls. This hikers body is stuffed completely so he is permanently in this walking position.
