Annalee Virtual Museum: 1960's

The late sixties saw the introduction of animals to the lineup. The wire base, in one configuration or another, first made an appearance in the 60’s. Feathers were a design feature used for hair between 1960-1963, after this, synthetic fur was used. The adorable mice made their debut in 1964 with three versions that proved so popular, that more were added to the line in the following years. The 1960’s saw the beginning of the animated faces, a feature that carries on to the present day. The largest Annalee doll ever made to this point in time was the 4’ Rhode Island Red Rooster with chicks. It was created in the early 1960’s for the New Hampshire’s Agricultural Department. Bunnies first appeared in 1964.

  • 1960: Yellow Autumn Elf, Item Number: 551305

Adorable little elf wearing his leaf greenery very proudly. His yellow wool felt hat matches his body covering and is adorned with a leaf 'garland' and matching 'tu tu'. In wonderful condition, and as a bonus if you flip him upside down, you will see he is signed on the back of his leg by Annalee herself! There does not appear to be any fading or staining on him, but on his hat there is the remains of what may have been glue, which suggests he may have had an extra leaf or two there. He is wearing an expression that suggests he is in mid song, and those features are nice and clear with no fading. Nice piece to add to your elf collection.

  • 1960: 10" Fat Friar, Item Number: 551905

Cute, adorable and maybe regretting that last doughnut, this cheeky Friar is hard to ignore and as a bonus is signed on the underside of his habit by Annalee! He owes his portly figure to a little extra padding around the middle. This shape comes from the use of a polystyrene ball glued in place to his wire frame and clothing under his habit. The habit is made from green wool felt which is not re-movable, and it has a pointed hood and matching felt cap. The ensemble is finished off with a rope effect string belt. Notice the use of synthetic fur for his hair and beard, which is in stark contrast to the use of yarn commonly used for hair in the earliest dolls up to the late 1950’s, early 1960’s. His facial features are clear and crisp, with some hand-painted detailing. Overall he is in very good condition, with maybe a little fading to his habit. Stands quite stable on his feet with a little extra help from the firmness of his habit.

  • 1960: 22" PJ Kid, Item Number: 559705

This is TRULY an amazing doll! In size, this little boy compares to the actual size of an 18 month old baby. Could this doll have been inspired by Annalee's two sons when they were babies? The most striking feature about this doll has to be the shock of thick black hair he has crowning his perfect little head. It is a style commonly known as a 'widows peak' or even an 'Elvis' inspired coif! Either way, the synthetic fur used for his hair is in strong contrast to the yarn used by Annalee for hair on her earlier dolls. The early 1960's was the turning point for this design feature. Beautiful detailed ears poke out from under his hair and help to frame the most loveable hand painted face. Piercing blue eye's, long hand-detailed lashes and a cute button nose make it hard not to pick him up and squeeze! One little tooth highlights his cute pink lipped mouth, and loveable rosy cheeks. On the back of this doll, a quick peak under his yellow clothing will reveal that Annalee signed this special little boy and also it has a number tag #583 attached. This was a later addition to the doll. These tags were introduced and attached as identification numbers when dolls were placed in the museum. A couple of interesting things to note about this doll is that his whole body is not felt covered, just his hands and arms up to his shoulders and his head. The rest of his body is a cotton covered wire frame. The cotton covering is holding the padding in place, which gives this boy his baby figure. On one hand there is only one defined finger and his thumb, and on the other hand, almost all his fingers are defined. All in all, he is in wonderful condition. He is showing a little wear on his hands with a couple of small holes and a small tear at his wrist. He will make a beautiful addition to your Annalee family!

  • 1960: 22" Elf (Yellow), Item Number: 551405

This is truly an original piece which includes an inscription from Annalee on his back which says "Hi Dorothia Naughty Annalee." Underneath that you can barely make out additional writing in large lettering but it is not easy to read. He has a number tag attached to his side which says 271 and a white Annalee Mobilitee tag attached to the back of his neck which has a date of 1963. He is wearing an all in one yellow body suit with collared neck and matching pointed toe boots with cuffed tops. We must not forget the matching yellow belt cinched in around his waist. Extremely detailed face with piercing green eyes and "Elfen" pointed ears poking out from under his yellow pointed stocking hat. All these details come together in harmony to complete this gentle elf. His expression of complete shock leaves the imagination wide open as to what story he is trying to tell. He is in wonderful condition with no apparent damage except for one small hole on the bottom of his foot, and a dropped stitch on the end of his hand. Originaly retailed for $5.95 in the mid 1960's.

  • 1960: 12" Woman Head, Item Number: 559305

Beautiful 12" Sample Woman Head in amazing condition with extraordinary finely detailed hand painted facial features. Her actual head measures approx. 7" and the addition of her long black yarn hair brings the measurement up to 12". As you will notice, Annalee designed her male dolls with ears and the females with none, and this beautiful example is no exception. This small fact does not distract from how gorgeous she is. Thick eyebrows, long flirty lashes and deep mesmerizing eyes draw you in. A cute well proportioned nose sits above a cupids bow of deep pink plump lips which finish off her exquisite face. This head never received a body, if it had, it would have truly been a sight to behold! On the underside of the head is a small intention hole which would have been used to fasten the head to her intended body. She is also is signed by Annalee herself!!

  • 1960: 22" Dartmouth Boy, Item Number: 551505

This guy was special for two reasons, one is that he is signed by Annalee underneath his jersey in the back and secondly he was probably a special order, circa mid-sixties. He wears pleated wool pants and a knit sweater with a plaid shirt underneath. The foot wear is not the same as the 10” version of the doll. Special attention has been paid to this doll's shoes. He has vinyl laced machine stitched shoes and striped stockings. The shoes and the stocking are stitched together so they will not get lost. Yarn was still in use with some dolls of this era and also on the 10” version of this doll. Also note the detailed ears. Female dolls, careful researchers will note, did not have ears. Hand painted detailing on his face gives this handsome young man a happy -go- lucky expression. The years have been a little unkind to this doll, with some holes appearing in his clothing and some fading and spot staining on his face, but this does not detract from the fact that he is still a fine example of a commemorative doll.

  • 1960: Blue & White Gypsies, Item Number: 552105

Four very whimsical little gypsies, all with story telling expressions in various poses of leisurely enjoyment. All of these 'gypsies' are signed on the reverse of their coats and bodies by Annalee herself. Each expression is crisp and clear with remarkable detailing, and they have no fading or damage. These gypsies are dressed in two variations of the same blue and white theme with matching white felt stocking hats and blue felt detailing. All four of the gypsies you see here are in wonderful condition with no apparent signs of wear or tear, they have been well looked after.

  • 1960: 10" Painters, Item Number: 552205

Two happy workmen/painters balancing on a scaffolding high above the ground. They seem unfazed by the fact that neither one is holding on, and that one has no paint on his brush! One is busy stiring the paint for the other one to slap on with that slightly over sized brush! Wonderful vignette depicting a job in process. Workman dolls similar to these were acquired by Altmans, a former department store on Fifth Avenue, NY. This store was well known for its animated window displays. Dolls like this were probably acquired as display props and these may have been used as a display when the store itself was under renovation in 1956. These are two wonderful dolls wearing white stitched detailed overalls, white felt shoes, red shirts with collars and cuffs. Each doll is signed on the back by Annalee herself and the underneath of the scaffolding will reveal a number 795 which was used for museum reference. The scaffolding is truly a thing to behold. It may have been hand-made by Chip Thorndike. Using wood and thick wire, it holds safely and securely our two intrepid workman who are glued to it and secured with wire also. Both in very good condition with a little wear and tear but nothing serious. The facial features on both these dolls are crisp and clear and each doll has only one ear! This piece would have originaly retailed for $10.00 back in the late 1950's.

  • 1960: Carpenter w/ T-Square, Item Number: 552305

Carpenter and workman dolls similar to these were acquired by Altmans, a former department store on Fifth Avenue, NY. This store was well known for its animated window displays. Dolls like this were probably acquired as display props and this may have been used as a display when the store itself was under renovation in 1956. These dolls are rare, but what makes this one even more special is the fact that it is signed and dated 1998! This doll is in very good condition with no wear or tear on his clothing or body. The bottom of his white felt shoes, which is foam, has started to deteriorate a little. His beautiful hand detailed face is adorable, but is showing a little damage on his bottom lip. Notice his hair is synthetic fur. Dolls made previous to this one in the 1950's sported yarn hair, and the early 1960's was a transitional period over to fur. Beautiful detailed ears and a nicely detailed cap, finish off this doll, and the fact that he is totally poseable thanks to his complete wire frame, adds to his uniqueness. A nice doll happy in his work.

  • 1960: 10" Hunting Doll w/Rifle, Item Number: 590005

Remarkable hunting doll showing off his real fur pelt for the world to see! If you spin him around, the rest of that pelt is hanging out the back of his hunting jacket pocket. Beautiful prop gun that he is holding very tightly is actually removeable. His clothing on the other hand is not, but it is all in beautiful condition, from his red felt stitched hat, gold hunting coat with shoulder protection patch and brown pants, down to his vinyl laced shoes. His shoes are soled with thick linoleum which helps him to stand very firmly on his own without the use of a stand. This gentleman hunter has no hair to keep those detailed little ears warm, but he does have the flaps on the side of his hat for that. Beautiful detailed facial features that are crisp and clear. There is no apparent damage, wear or tear anywhere on this beautiful doll, which represents one of the many dolls Annalee designed depicting popular New Hampshire outdoor activities. Climbing, hiking, skiing, swimming, diving and fishing are others that were popular dolls during the 1950’s and 1960’s before the introduction of animals into the lineup. A quick peek under his hunting jacket in the back will reveal that this doll is also signed by Annalee herself!

Detailed doll enjoying a hike in the New Hampshire mountains. Beautiful detailed face with an expression which says a 100 words. He stands stable with the aid of linoleum soled shoes and the remains of a wire stand that protrudes from the back of his walking boots. He boots are beautifully detailed in vinyl with real string laces. He is wearing tan pants and red wool jersey. Lovely example of an Annalee doll getting into all sorts of mischief. This doll from the 1960's has a shock of red yarn hair, reminiscent of the time, and large 'oval' almond shaped eyes, also a typical design features used during the 1960's. Notice her slightly out of proportion hands and feet with limited fingers, thumbs and toes. This unique signed piece is actually very stable in spite of the fact that the camera prop weighs more that the doll itself! There is something to be said for the wonderful design aspect of the half wire stand used during this period. He shows the typical 1960’s hair style and clothing very reminiscent of the time, very ‘Beatles’ inspired. Even the camera has a signed number on the base. He is in very good condition and facial features are crisp and clear. The doll's collar has come unstitched in the back. Shows some minor staining on the front of the dolls pants. He is grinning very cheekily just waiting to catch a picture of his next unsuspecting victim. This doll would have retailed for $9.95 in the mid 1960's. "Smile"!

This wonderful doll is in beautiful condition. She has flowing yellow yarn hair tied in two bunches with butter colored bows. Yarn hair was used in the early dolls up to the early 1960’s. She is also signed by Annalee, which is wonderful . Her beautiful hand-painted facial features are still crisp and clear. Her expression is characterized as a “character face”, reminiscent of the 50’s and 60’s before they changed over to the more animated faces of the late 1960’s to the present day. She is in very good condition, showing no visible wear or tear on her clothing or body. Notice her little white socks and red Mary Jane shoes. • 1967: 7" Garden Club Baby, Item Number: 559505

This loveable little lady is proudly wearing her Spring Garden Club bonnet adorned with a peach colored paper carnation and greenery. Lime green netted fabric gives this bonnet a wide stiff rim and it is attached to the doll by means of a ribbon 'bowed' under her chin. White synthetic fabric hair peeks from underneath her hat and frames a very happy cheeky little face. Her beautiful little detailed features are marred somewhat by the appearance of a small hole or two on her cheeks and nose, but this really does not detract from how cute she really is. No damage is apparent anywhere else on the doll. Her ingenious little wire framed body allows her to sit quite comfortably in this position or in any position you care to put her in. A quick peek unerneath will reveal two things. Firstly her museum identification tag #108, and a signature by Annalee herself! Cute little finger and toe detailing on her hands and feet. This doll was created in many electric colors and originaly retailed for $2.95 in the late 1960's.

  • 1969: 10" Bony Tony w/Ball, Item Number: 590905

Another fine example from Annalee's ravishing lovelies collection, which retailed during the late 1960's and early 1970's at $3.00ea. The dolls in this collection came in two measurements, 7", and the 10" featured here. This doll is lovingly refered to as 'Bony Tony' and is seen here holding a rather colorful beach ball looking very happy with himself. He is part of a collection of dolls designed by Annalee showing various aspects of beach life enjoyment, from bathing, diving, snorkeling and sunbathing. Bony Tony has a wonderful head of thick black synthetic fur hair reminiscent of the style of this decade. Before fur was used for hair, Annalee liked to use yarn on the early dolls. Wonderful detailed face with large arched eyebrows and huge grin which gives him a wonderful, handsome face. Notice he has ears, which Annalee never gave to her female dolls, only her male dolls. He is wearing orange shorts and peeking out above them is his museum identity tag 22. If you take a peek at his neck, you will see he is signed by Annalee and attached is his Annalee Mobilitee tag dated 1966. His body is fully poseable thanks to his wonderful wire frame designed by Annalee and her husband Chip. Wonderful doll in excellent condition.
