Annalee Virtual Museum: 1970's

The tags became more and more varied in terms of the verbiage written on each one. This decade also saw the end of the red nose on the reindeer line and for support we saw the complete round wire base used for dolls. The 70’s saw the introduction of the first bear in 1973, and the first witch showed up 1978, but didn’t show up as a line or ‘Halloween collection’ until 1985, when there were several Witch Mice.

  • 1970: 7" Mr and Mrs Santa w/rocking chair, Item Number: 560705

What a happy couple they make! Here we see an idyllic picture of the Claus's enjoying a quite moment with Mr Santa taking a load off those feet for a few minutes and Mrs Santa at the helm. They are not attached to the beautiful handmade wooden rocking chair so they could very easily be interchangeable. They are both in very good condition and they both have a very good head of white synthetic fur hair. Take note of the fact that Santa’s beard is not the same fabric as was used for his hair. In this case, Annalee used the fur trim often reserved for trimming Santa’s many suits! Once again the overall felt body covering is not used here. It is the suits in this case, which are used to cover the wire frame of their bodies. Mrs Santa has a red and white gingham apron on which matches Mr Santa's Waistcoat. Felt covering is reserved for the face and their hands. They both owe their pot bellied shape to the use of a polystyrene ball attached to their wire frame in the middle. Back in 1977 this set originally sold for $6.00

  • 1970: 7" Black Santa w/bag, Item Number: 560205

Wonderful example of a well rounded Santa carrying a very full sack of Christmas goodies! He looks very happy with himself. As a bonus this doll is signed!! This unusual doll owes his very round shape to the addition of a round polystyrene ball attached to his wire frame under his Santa Suit. With his bright green felt wool gloves and green felt boots he is ready to help spread Christmas Cheer to every boy and girl. In wonderful condition with beautiful crisp clear features.

  • 1970: 7" Monkey, Item Number: 562705

My guess is this little doll is suffering from a terrible headache. Too much monkey business. The hand to the head and the closed eyes with sour expression suggests that this doll may need a couple of aspirin. He or she is wearing a red and white stripped outfit with a white cap. With the help of a wire tail, this monkey can stand quite stable. It has a wonderful shock of ginger colored hair poking out from that cap which is made from synthetic fur. Synthetic fur was used by Annalee for hair from the early 1960's right up to the present day. This doll has an Annalee Mobilitee tag attached to its body on the back and the outfit is also signed on the back by Annalee herself. Back in the early 1970's this doll originally retailed for $4.50.

  • 1970: 7" Santa on Ski-Bob w/Oversize Bag, Item Number: 562905

Another fine example of the props Annalee used along-side her dolls. This particular year, Santa’s reindeer got to spend Christmas Eve with their feet up! Unfortunately this doll is missing the oversized bag that it originally came with and also the Ski-Bob is missing the steering wheel, which could prove a problem for this Santa! But over all, considering it is nearly 40 years old, it is in remarkable condition. Santa is signed by Annalee herself and the Ski-Bob has a number edition on the bottom. The Ski-Bob was made by Aurora, Il. Plastic Co. and made in the USA. This piece originally retailed for $5.95 in 1970. The features on the doll are still crisp and clear and there seems to be no other apparent wear and tear. He has a bendable, poseable frame with no padding under that suit except for his portly middle, which owes its shape to a round polystyrene ball attached to the frame.

  • 1971: 7" Santa with Oversized Toy Bag, Item Number: 560905

Where has all of Santa's help gone as he tries to lift that heavy bag? With such a happy smiling face, it looks like he doesn't seem to mind one bit. The bag he is carrying is made from actual sack material and has two attached patches glued on for effect. The bag helps him to stand very stable also with the help of the wire frames in his feet. He owes his portly stature to a polystyrene ball attached to the wire frame at his middle which helps him to fill out that red Santa suit very nicely. His suit is trimmed with white synthetic fur, which also matches his beard, and his outfit is finished off with seasonal green felt gloves to keep his hands warm. He has a very detailed face with some hand-painted highlighting, big rosy cheeks and a big toothy grin. How could you not love this little Santa. Back in 1971 this Santa retailed for $4.00.

  • 1971: 7" Santa with Mail Box, Item Number: 561405

This Santa is making sure that all the Christmas Wish Lists make it to him on time… The mail box could in fact double as a little money box for those left over pennies as there is a little key attached to the side when you need to empty it. This Santa is very characteristic of the time. He has a synthetic fur beard that continues to the trim of his hat and red suit. The idea of boots is created by the addition of green felt over the top of his suit, and he owes his portly Santa shape to the addition of a polystyrene ball attached to the wire frame around his middle. There is no additional padding for shape on this Santa. He has a very jolly detailed face with some hand detailing for the moustache and highlights on his face. He has an Annalee Mobilitee tag attached to his back with a 1971 date on it and along side that is a signature by Annalee and a number 198 which could have been an unfinished date when it was signed. This doll originally retailed for $5.50 back in 1974.

  • 1971: 10" Elf with Skis and Poles, Item Number 560005
This elf (X-52) was part of a series of several skiing elves in the 1971 winter collection each with different coats and different levels of skiing ability! The clothing is not removable neither is the scarf which is fixed to the body. He has synthetic hair reminiscent of dolls from the early 1960’s to the present day, and notice how he’s face is not as rounded as the early dolls in the 50’s and 60’s. However this elves eyes are small similar to facial features of much earlier dolls. Notice how the felt shoes are attached over the wire framed feet. The doll originally retailed for $3.50 back in 1971.

  • 1971: 10" Mr Snowman No. 1, Item Number: 562305

Happy snowman taking it easy or did he slip on the ice? This snowman is adorned with a bright red scarf, pea green ear muffs, seasonal green felt wool gloves and topped off with a black felt hat with red trim and overflowing snow out of the top. The eyes are closed on his very rosy face and he has a black pom pom nose. As was typical of the Santa's during the 1970's, this snowman owes its round shape to the addition of a polystyrene ball which is attached to his wire frame at its middle. There is no additional padding on this doll which does make it a little easier to pose, but does mean this dolls lacks the defined shape to the arms and the legs. Nice 'round' head design reminiscent of this decade. This doll has the Annalee Mobilitee Tag attached which is made of paper and has a date of 1971 on it with the removal of tag warning and contents of materials. An adorable little snowman.

  • 1971: 12" Santa in White Suit w/green scarf, Item Number: 562005

Here is an unusual little Santa, not in his red suit but he has opted for a clean white outift with matching hat and a green wool felt scarf that matches all the intricate stitching around his body. Maybe the patches on his hat suggest that this Santa was a little down on his luck that year and could not afford to dry clean his red suit. He does have his very well known large bushy white synthetic fur beard and hair typical of the era and still used today. A peek under his scarf will reveal his museum identity tag and low and behold a signature by Annalee herself! He is in wonderful condition and his facial features are still crisp and clear. He has a fabric tag attached with Annalee Mobilitee Doll on one side and penalty of law and contents information on the other side.

  • 1971: 7" Elf with Candle and Holy Hat, Item Number: 562605

Here's a cute little elf doing a wonderful juggling act keeping that candle upright on his head and still being able to look adorable! He is wearing an all in one pea green outfit with matching stocking hat and two button detailing. Around his neck he has a matching scarf wrapped for our cold New Hampshire Christmas evenings. His outfit is literally topped off with a red felt 'candle' which sits on a green felt cardboard base with holly wreath detailing at the candle base. A unique idea which originally retailed for $4.00 each back in 1972.

  • 1971 Annalee's Workshop (now named the Annalee Outlet Store) opens in Meredith, New Hampshire.
  • 1972 First full-color product catalog published.
  • 1973 First Bear introduced into the line.
  • 1973: 18" Bear with Butterfly, Item Number: 559405

We all know the story of how the original Teddy Bear came into being. Back in 1902, a cartoonist depicted President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot a captured bear while hunting in Mississippi. If that hadn’t happened, we may not be looking at this little guy here. This adorable bear, signed by Annalee, is a classic. He is missing his butterfly, which you can tell from his expression was bringing him/her so much joy, but that does not distract from the pure adorability the little guy oozes! He is also missing his original vest/jacket and note his attached nose that just doesn’t quite seem in line with the rest of his face. If you look very carefully under this nose, you can see some painted detailing which may suggest that the nose he has now was not the original one. Apart from that ‘minor detail’, this bear is in wonderful condition, apart from a small hole starting to appear on the top of his leg. A little TLC will put this bear back in tip top condition. He has a mass of toffee colored synthetic fur hair, (the synthetic fur was used for hair from the early 1960’s up to the present day). He has some minor spot staining in a few places on his body. Another thing to note is that on this bear, you will see that the neck is completely covered and finished with felt. If you compare this to the early dolls of the 50’s and 60’s, you will see that the neck, if there was one, was covered by a separate piece of felt but it was not attached to the body or the head, giving the doll a less finished appearance. This bear originally retailed at $10.50 back in 1973.

  • 1973: 10" Monkey Boy, Item Number: 559605

Cute, mischevious little monkey, lying down pondering life or where to get a banana! Long 6" tail curls over the back of his green and white striped shirt with a large pointed collar. As a bonus, the back of his shirt is signed by Annalee herself. A dashing red felt stocking hat adorns his head, with a shock of silver synthetic fur hair poking out from underneath it. His hat sits cocked on one side above a detailed little ear, and on the other ear, no detailing at all. Very detailed facial features with some hand-painting also. Peach colored wool felt boots and gloves cover his hands and feet and he has a white felt covered body. In very good condition with no apparent signs of wear or tear. Originaly retailed for around $4.95 in the early to mid 1970's.

  • 1974: 7" Santa on Ladder w/gifts, Item Number: 561605

This clever little guy is doing one of two things. He is either coming down the ladder front ways or going up the ladder backwards! Either way he is dropping his gifts everywhere! He is described in the early catalogues of the time as Santa with a white Fur Trim. One thing is for sure, he’s special because he is signed by Annalee herself with a date of 1998. We date him to 1974, and on his tag it reads 1971. You will also see this ladder prop he is attached to used during the 1970’s on other designs like the 7” Fireman Mouse (1978). Over all, he is in good condition, showing no obvious wear and tear, just a couple of loose stitches on the end of his hat. His facial features are crisp and clear. Once again with this doll as with other dolls of this time, he does not have a felt body, only his face is felt. His Santa suit is the covering for the wire frame underneath and his pot belly owes its shape to a polystyrene ball which is attached to the wire frame at his middle. His ‘shoes’ consist of cut out green felt glued over the suit covering his feet. The gifts are felt covered plastic blocks tied with gold ribbon and wire attaches them to the ladder. A comical touch to Christmas décor!
